Temples in India: Are they worth the visit?

I have just returned from a visit to some South Indian temples, especially those in Kancheepuram. I was apalled at the greed the priests possess. They can speak to you in the language of your choice as long as there is a "Gandhi" in your hand, you are willing to separate with. The moment you show some hesitation, you are shown the door in curt Tamil.

I now think, are they really worth the visit but for the architectural splendour?
